If for one small moment in one special day, you could experience a child's joy - hear the laughter, see the smiles, all the while knowing the medical challenges they face each day–wouldn't you want to be part of it?
The Hemby Cup was founded to give sick children, if for just one day, time to forget about the treatments, the rehabilitation, and the medicine and just have FUN. This annual fundraising hockey event is a face off that benefits Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital, Presbyterian Children's Emergency Department and Presbyterian Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Clinic.
Since 2001 the Hemby Cup has raised over $600,000. The Hemby Cup funds have provided X-box game systems for the pediatric hospital, built a brand new playground within the hospital and funded the Arts For Life Program. Arts For Life provides daily visual art, music, photography, creative writing lessons, and art support groups to children, adolescents, and young adults battling cancer, life-threatening diseases, and other disabilities. The funds have also been used to purchase needed medical equipment, beds, toys, games and books for the playroom.
Founded by Charlotte based Microsoft employees, the Hemby Cup has teamed with many community partners over the years including the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, Wachovia, Bank or America and many other area companies.
The Hemby Cup is more than just a hockey game; it is a combination of many different efforts and events leading up to the actual game day. Each year the Hemby Cup players & volunteers assist Hemby Children's hospital in organizing holiday parties for the children, assisting in programs at the hospital, and volunteering with the children. The majority of the funds raised come from the sale of Hemby Cup apparel and tickets, which organizers and volunteers spend many hours selling in support of the children.
Without a doubt the highlight each year is the Hemby Cup game itself! Game day allows the unique opportunity for entire families to participate in a charitable event and share in the fun. The children from Hemby Children's Hospital participate in all facets of the game. From dropping the ceremonial first puck, presenting the Hemby Cup trophy to the victors and skating on the ice with the players, volunteers, and public, it is obvious the children are the focal point of the Hemby Cup!
There are thousands of people working for great companies in Charlotte that feel a responsibility to give back to the community...and they do. The Hemby Cup takes that responsibility seriously and supports a great cause in the Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital.
The Hemby Cup brings the best of the Charlotte community together for one small moment on one special day.
